The Farm

Middle Farm is a mixed farm extending to over 400 acres of which more than half is used for arable production with the remainder being used for cattle grazing and sheep rearing.

The land is farmed by Sir Donald and Lady Curry in a share farming arrangement with John and Fiona Charlton who welcome the visit of school groups to take advantage of the wide variety of learning experiences that the farm and its surrounding area provides.


Physical Description

The farm is located within the Countryside Commission’s ‘Mid Northumberland’ Character area. The Erring Burn, a tributary of the North Tyne forms the southern boundary of the farm.

Farm features :

South Facing, Gently Undulating Terrain
On an Intermediate Plateau of Upland Fringe
Situated between the Pennine Uplands and Coastal Plain
Between 70m and 130m above sea level
Geology - Predominently Limestone
Soils - Stagnogley type, overlaid with Mineral Topsoil

The Climate

The average rainfall in the area is 670mm per year. Temperatures range from an average of just under 3°C in January to around 14.5°C in July. The crop growing season lasts for approximately 238 days between early April and late November. This gives a corresponding animal grazing season of about 203 days between April and October.
