Health and Safety Issues When Visiting Middle Farm

ALL Visitors must be aware that every farm is a working environment and as such is a potentially dangerous place.

However, if basic health and safety principles are followed, a visit to Middle Farm will be a very enjoyable and informative experience for teachers, pupils and parents alike.

The main issues to be considered when planning and preparing for a visit are:

1 Please ensure that everyone wears appropriate clothing, including Wellingtons and/or outdoor shoes/boots, and that their footwear is cleaned and changed before leaving the farm. Warm, waterproof clothing is also advised.
2 Please ensure everyone is aware of the rules of the visit, stressing that they must not eat or chew in areas other than those which the farm provides for the purpose. Hands must be thoroughly washed before eating AND after any contact with animals and/or the animals’ bedding, buildings, grains etc.
3 Please do not allow children to pick up tools, climb on walls or walk into animal pens unless permission has been given by farm staff.
4 Children are the responsibility of their teachers during the visit and must be supervised at all times. They must be told to follow not just their teacher’s instructions but those of the farm staff also.
5 The Pond, burn area and farm steading are sites on the farm where EXTRA care and vigilance should be taken at ALL times.

Further details are given in the HSER information sheet AIS23 and should be clearly understood by those involved in planning a visit.
